New Delhi, July 16, 2023: Shaping the future of education in Meghalaya, the state government has embarked on a significant endeavor by appointing a four-member state education commission.

Headed by Sherwin May Sungoh, the esteemed head of the education department at North Eastern Hill University, the commission is tasked with formulating crucial reforms and policy changes to enhance the quality of education in schools, colleges, and higher and technical education institutions across the state.

Joining Sherwin May Sungoh on this vital mission are former UPSC chairman David Reid Syiemlieh, former MBOSE executive chairman Tony TC Marak, and education secretary Ambrose Ch Marak, who will serve as the member secretary.

In addition to these core members, the commission will receive valuable support from 12 co-opted members, ensuring a diverse and comprehensive perspective in its recommendations. With a two-year term, the commission has ample time to evaluate the education landscape and propose impactful reforms.

The primary objective of the Education Commission is to recommend concrete solutions, strategic interventions, and policy decisions that align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

By adhering to the principles and goals outlined in the NEP, the commission seeks to bring about transformative changes in the school and higher education system. Its recommendations will address critical aspects of education, including curriculum development, infrastructure enhancement, teacher training, and accountability measures.

Apart from formulating reforms, the Education Commission has been entrusted with the crucial role of advising the Meghalaya government on key matters related to the school and college system. This includes examining salary structures, school management functioning, and implementing accountability mechanisms. The commission will thoroughly assess challenges faced by the education sector in Meghalaya, evaluate performance and financial aspects, and propose effective solutions to enhance the overall educational landscape.

Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma expressed confidence in the commission’s ability to address the critical issues affecting education in the state. He emphasized the importance of performance, accountability, and fair compensation for teachers, and reiterated that the commission’s work will be aligned with the NEP 2020’s vision of creating a holistic and inclusive education system for the country.
