27th June 2023: Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday, provided a demonstration of complicated, precision semiconductor technology that global semiconductor systems maker Micron Technology is bringing to India.

This comes as Micron Technology, based in the United States, announced plans to invest up to $825 million on its first semiconductor manufacturing and testing facility in the Indian state of Gujarat. The Centre’s “Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme” has authorised Micron Technology’s facility.

The minister was quoted saying, “The first semiconductor unit of India will be set up by Micron Technologies… We’re hopeful that within the next six quarters, we should have the first made-in-India semiconductor chip rolling out of this factory.”

It should be noted that Micron’s plant, which will be located in Gujarat’s Sanand Industrial Park, would mostly focus on packaging chips rather than producing them. According to an Indian Express article, the company would convert wafers into ball grid array integrated circuit packages, memory modules, and solid-state drives.

Micron will receive 50 percent fiscal support for the overall project cost from the Centre as part of the government’s “Modified Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) Scheme” and 20 percent fiscal support from Gujarat.

Micron’s new facility will enable assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products, addressing demand from both domestic and foreign markets, according to a statement released previously.

Prime Minister asked Micron Technology to boost semiconductor production in India, noting that India can provide competitive advantages in several sectors of the semiconductor supply chain.
