Tamil Nadu Government Affirms Retention of B R Ambedkar’s Portraits in Courts, Assures “Status Quo to be Continued”

New Delhi, July 25, 2023: The Tamil Nadu government has taken a firm stance in favor of retaining the portraits of Dr. B R Ambedkar in courts across the state.

The Law Minister, S Reghupathy, held discussions with Chief Justice Sanjay Vijaykumar Gangapurwala of the Madras High Court to convey the government’s position on the matter. This move came in response to rumors circulating about the removal of Ambedkar’s portraits from court premises.

In an official release, the government stated that the Law Minister personally sent a letter to Chief Justice Gangapurwala, emphasizing the significance of preserving Ambedkar’s portraits in courts. The Chief Justice promptly responded, clarifying that no order had been issued to remove the portraits of any leaders. He further assured that the “status quo to be continued,” signifying the continuation of existing practices.

The information was also disseminated among advocates to allay any concerns regarding the reported move to limit portraits to those of Tamil saint poet Thiruvalluvar and Mahatma Gandhi in courts. A section of advocates had previously staged a protest in response to the rumored proposal.

The assurance from the Tamil Nadu government and Chief Justice Gangapurwala’s clear directive have alleviated worries expressed by some political parties over the potential removal of Dr. B R Ambedkar’s portraits. Dr. Ambedkar, a visionary leader and the architect of India’s Constitution, holds immense significance in the hearts of many citizens, and his portraits symbolize his contributions to the nation’s progress and social justice.
