New Delhi, July 12, 2023: The Yamuna River’s water level at the Old Delhi railway bridge surged past the 207-meter mark early Wednesday morning and is anticipated to rise further, raising concerns of a potential flood in the capital. This surpasses the previous highest flood level record of 207.49 meters. As of 10:45 am, the water level stood at 207.37 meters.

According to the Central Water Commission’s flood-monitoring portal, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge exceeded 207 meters at 4 am, marking the first occurrence since 2013, and reached 207.25 meters by 8 am on Wednesday.

The ITO Chhat Ghat, situated along the Yamuna River, has been submerged due to the rising water levels, with benches and polls also being inundated. As of 8 am, the water level had already reached 207.25 meters.

Officials from the irrigation and flood control department predict that the river will rise to 207.35 meters by noon on Wednesday, with expectations of further escalation. In response to the situation, senior police officials have instructed police stations along the riverbanks to enhance vigilance and establish coordination with other agencies to ensure immediate evacuation in case of waterlogging.

The sudden rise in water level can be attributed to continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas and saturated soil resulting from heavy precipitation in Delhi and neighboring regions over the weekend. Last year, the Yamuna River breached the danger mark twice, reaching a level of 206.38 meters in September.

As a precautionary measure, people residing in flood-prone areas have been relocated to safer locations at higher altitudes. The Old Railway Bridge has been closed for traffic, and all gates of the Okhla Barrage have been opened to discharge excess water and mitigate prolonged high water levels. The Delhi government issued flood warnings on Sunday and Tuesday, directing authorities to remain vigilant and take necessary actions in vulnerable areas.

With light rain forecast for Wednesday, the water level in the Yamuna River may further rise, posing additional challenges for officials. Recent heavy rains in the capital have already resulted in several rain-related incidents, causing casualties and property damage. Delhiites are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on the evolving weather conditions.
