Old Rs 500 notes to be history from midnight today
New Delhi, December 15: The extensions on the use of the now demonetised rupees 500 notes are set to end at midnight today. After the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes were removed from their status as legal tender, the government had allowed their use for certain specific purposes including for the payment of utility services and government hospital bills until December 15th.
The decommissioned Rs 500 notes could also be used till today for making purchases at milk booths operating under central or state governments and for mobile recharge. They could also be used for payments at crematoria and burial grounds.
Warning citizens of the imminent expiry of the note, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das had earlier tweeted a reminder. “Exemptions for use of old Rs 500 notes will end on 15 Dec midnight,” the economic affairs secretary tweeted. Further the government has made it clear that there will be no further extension provided for the use of the note. However, in case you are in possession of the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, they can be deposited in bank accounts till December 30, 2016.
The government had earlier allowed the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes to be used at petrol pumps. However, widespread misuse of the measure led the government to put an end to the particular exemption on December 2nd.
