Delhi, Sept 21st,2022: Rajasthan Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot, who is likely to contest the party presidential polls, met with interim president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday.
Ahead of the meeting, Gehlot had said that he will contest the polls if other leaders want him to do so and if not, then he is happy to serve as a senior leader and the Chief Minister.
“The party has given me everything. I have been holding various posts for the last 40-50 years. Posts and positions are not important to me. Fulling the responsibilities given to me is more important”, he said.
Gehlot met with Sonia Gandhi at her residence at Janpath Road in New Delhi today.
Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh had earlier claimed that if Gehlot takes up the post of party president then he would have to step down as the CM of Rajasthan.
In reference to the ‘one man one post’ rule, Singh said that one cannot be Chief Minister and party chief.
According to reports, Gehlot is likely to quit the top post in Rajasthan to keep his political rival, Sachin Pilot from assuming the post of party chief.
Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor also met with Sonia Gandhi a few days earlier and received approval for contesting in the elections.
Ashok Gehlot will fly down to Kerala to join Rahul Gandhi in the party’s foot march after the meeting.
