Kulbhushan Jadhav case : ICJ verdict expected at 3:30 pm today; family, friends pray for reprieve

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will pronounce on Thursday its verdict on India’s plea to stay the execution of Kulbhushan Jadhav, sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court for alleged espionage.

A brief statement posted on the ICJ’s website said: “A public sitting will take place at 12 noon at the Peace Palace in The Hague, during which Judge Ronny Abraham, President of the Court, will read the court’s decision.”

India has charged Pakistan with showing scant regard to the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (VCCR) and asked the world court in The Hague to immediately intervene.

Below are the live updates:

2:45pm: India approached the ICJ on May 8 and accused Pakistan of violating the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations by persistently denying consular access to Jadhav and conducting a “farcical trial” without a “shred of evidence”.

2:35pm: India challenged Jadhav’s sentence last week, basing its arguments around what it says have been violations of the Vienna Convention’s rules on giving countries access to their citizens accused of crime on a foreign soil.
