Delhi (India), February 15, 2023: The Assam government’s recent advertisement claiming that India’s sixth Jyotirlinga is situated at Dakini Hill in the state has come under fire from the opposition in Maharashtra. The state recognizes the Jyotirlinga located at Bhimashankar in Pune district as the sixth Jyotirlinga.

A linga is a symbol of Lord Shiva, and places from where Lord Shiva emerged are called Jyotirlingas. The advertisement, issued by the Assam government on Tuesday, has been condemned by the opposition in Maharashtra.

State Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant took to Twitter, stating, “Leave aside industries (of Maharashtra), the BJP wants to snatch away even Bhagwan Shiva from Maharashtra.” He demanded that the Maharashtra government clarify its stand and condemn the Assam government’s action, which has hurt the emotions and sentiments of 12 crore people in Maharashtra.

NCP MP Supriya Sule also criticized the Assam government on Twitter, questioning whether the BJP has decided to snatch away Maharashtra’s cultural and spiritual treasures along with its industries.

She referred to Shrimad Adi Shankaracharya’s Bruhad Ratnakar Stotra, which states that the mouth of the Bhima River and jungle of Dakini are where Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located.
