2nd September: Varidhi Nauriyal, a woman from Noida working at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan was recently selected to be a “HF star” by her colleagues for her dedication and resilience during Covid times.

Varidhi did her schooling from Delhi Public School, Noida and MBBS From Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi. Later, she went on to pursue MD & Specialisation from US.

Varidhi chose to be an Infectious Diseases /critical care fellow after her stint as a faculty in Yale IM. From Day 1, she dedicated herself to be the best in both the subspecialty fields. She clearly stood out with her passion towards exemplary patient care.

During COVID-19 surge in March/April 2020, Varidhi insisted to her program directors to let her continue to be in ICU beyond her standard allocated rounding time and rounded for over 2 months continuously.

During these tough times she proved to be a leader. She dedicated long hours and provided the best available patient care. She was instrumental in integrating management strategies of all specialties including ID while providing top-notch patient care.

The ICU unit she ran was clearly the best among all the ICUs during the peak of COVID-19. She inspired and motivated her team of residents, nurses, co-fellows and staff physicians constantly despite tough times.

She arranged for ICU/ID team meetings regularly and was a key player in implementing a successful corticosteroid strategy in the management of COVID-19 which eventually saved many lives. She was always the first to volunteer to be in COVID-19 rooms and kept her residents and other team members away from harm’s way.

“Varidhi is clearly a key member of the successful Henry Ford Main Campus ICU team. In my mind, Varidhi is not just a star. She is truly a ‘super-star’,” said a colleague.

“I truly believe she personally saved many lives. The amount of risk Varidhi took onto herself was tremendous. Since her unit was the original COVID unit, it was always 100% filled with COVID patients.”

“Varidhi also insisted on doing all the procedures required for the COVID patients, Lines, intubation, etc. I know Varidhi puts her patients ahead of everything in her life, that she is committed to her patients in a way that is not reasonable to expect from anyone.”
