Two-day strike by central trade unions evokes mixed response across the country

New Delhi: Central Trade Union held a two days countrywide general strike on January 8 & 9 against anti-labour and anti-people policies of the NDA government, the call for general strike was given on September 28, 2018 from the National Convention of Workers at New Delhi.



The two-day strike by central trade unions evoked mixed response across the country, with banking and transport services being affected partially and few incidents of violence seen in West Bengal.

According to trade union representative, “Reports pouring in from early morning of 8th January as workers moved into action, responding spontaneously to the strike call. Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Puducherry, Kerala were reported to be completely shut down. Bihar was on industrial strike on 8th but has been totally shut down today”.

” The BEST Mumbai city road transport service provided by the Municipal corporation, recorded a 100% strike. Teachers and students also participated in the strike actively”, the representative added.

Several representative from Central Trade Unions held a press conference at Press Club of India on January 9, to confirm that the countrywide general strike has been successfully conducted.
