With farmers protesting in 4 states, where is the money of Krishi Kalyan Cess going?
It was in 1965 that the then Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri gave the slogan of "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan".
It was done to encourage soldiers to protect the borders and well as to boost morale of farmers to increase production that can decrease our dependence on imports.
Fifty two years later we are witnessing a situation where farmers are battling in larger part of country to get adequate price for their production.
In a very disturbing turn of events five farmer have also been killed in police firing yesterday in MP’s Mandasaur.
Last year from June 1st a new tax in form of Krishi Kalyan Cess came into existence. Explaining the need of the same the government had said, "The Krishi Kalyan Cess has been levied for the purpose of financing and promoting initiatives to improve agriculture".
But today when the country is witnessing such unprecedented revolt of farmers in different states, the significance of KKC comes into question?
The glaring question that this government must answer is why so many farmers from so many different states this unsatisfied? What have been the factora that has given rise to do much discontent in this fraternity of food providers?
If the end benefit of Krishi Kalyan Cess isn’t reaching the farmers in terms of increased price for their production, how exactly does this money being utilized to promote agriculture?
The purpose of Krishi Kalyan Cess certainly wouldn’t have been to buy bullets to fire on farmers?
